You Need To Dump New Year's Resolutions

And Do This Instead

In a year where just about nothing went as planned, and the world seemed to have turned upside down, we've faced way too many challenges and seeing it come to an end can't come soon enough.

This entire year felt like riding a roller-coaster inside a whirlpool.

This year hammered us with many lessons.

It taught us the need to be flexible, patient, and kind.

It taught us that plans change, priorities shift and sometimes goals, achievements and targets  need to be put aside.

We’ve learned that pain and suffering are inevitable.

We’ve learned that conflicts can bring out the best and the worst in us.

We’ve learned that kindness goes a long way.

And that life as we know it can be taken away in a matter of moments.

Finally, after 365 days we're at the cusp of leaving this year behind us and turning the page to a new, filled with hope year.

Starting a new year's is always exciting.

But his year is different.

We just want this year to be over!

Can you imagine the sigh of relief when 2020 will change and become 2021?

Before we can start planning ambitiously and setting up our desired achievements, outcomes and map for the year to come, we need to let go of this year.

And we can't...

...Because this year will linger into the new year as it slowly dissipates and dissolves into history and part of our past.

This new year's eve is nothing like any other new year we've ever had.

This year-end into starting a new year needs a totally new different approach.

More than a new year celebration, this year is ending with a 'good riddance', 'thank goodness it's over' and the urge to move on and forward.

Here are some things you can do to help yourself do just that:

Embrace

While the hope is here and we are glimpsing into a brighter future, the transition unlike the year will take longer than a split second to change.

As we slowly progress distribution and vaccination, we still need to practice social distancing, wear our masks, wash our hands, and protect ourselves and others with our PPE.

Businesses and the economy will need time and help to recover.

All these will remain for the longer part of the year to come.

Here are a few ways you can embrace the upcoming months:

  • Find or create a nice neat place to keep your masks, gloves and any other ppe equipment you have.
  • Make your handwashing more pleasant by getting and using some really nice luxurious feeling/smelling soaps
  • Perhaps invest in a new set or two of new soft hand towels.
  • Keep a nice hand cream next to your hand soap to hydrate your hands after you wash them.
  • Try to buy from small businesses and support the restaurants industry.

De-clutter the year

One of the best ways to letting go, leaving behind and making room for new things and experiences is de-cluttering.

De-cluttering does not have to be a 'stuff' thing.

we collect and clutter in almost every area of our life, which becomes overwhelming and takes way too much of our time, energy, and space for other and better experiences.

  • Spend some time unsubscribing from e-mail lists that you either delete on a daily basis without opening or that you’re not really interested in anymore.
  • Social Media clean up - take a look at all the groups you are in, is this group serving you? Are you enjoying it? Are you participating in it? - if not, then leave the group.  Do the same with pages you like - it’s okay to ‘unlike’ pages that you’re not interested in anymore. Do the same on Instagram, Linked in and any other Social media platform you’re on.
  • Too many ‘friends’ on your social platform that you have no idea who they are? Time to unfollow, remove, hide, and keep in touch with those you are interested in. Choose quality over quantity.
  • Mailbox - It actually doesn’t take that long and quite easy to stop many of those spam letters in your mailbox. Take 30 minutes, open them up, and you will most likely find in the letter a section that lets you know how to stop receiving them in the future. Usually, it’s a phone number and takes less than a minute!

Cherish

Despite the never ending bad stuff, we all had some nice moments and good things happen this year.Take your time to remember and cherish those events and moments.Write them down in your planner, make an artistic layout, or simply write them on little pieces of paper and put them in a jar - keep it to remind yourself in the next few months that no matter how hard it gets, there are still positive things that happen every day.

For the most part, our happiness in life is made from small ordinary moments.

Moments of small interactions, little achievements, and joyous occasions.

  • A developing new friendship
  • Funny moment that made you laugh
  • A meaningful conversation you had
  • Did you learn something new?
  • Are you better at something?

Look Forward

Let's face it, we are entering this new year with enough stress, pressure and apprehension for a lifetime.

Making new year resolutions will only make it worse and make you feel even more under pressure and stress.resolutions Instead of your usual goals, vision boards, and lists of projects you want to accomplish in the year to come, take some time to think and create an intention for the person you would like to become this year.

Here are some questions to help you:

  • What are your five most important values and how would you like to practice them with more emphasis this year?
  • How kind, patient, and supportive are you of yourself - Would you like to be a better friend to yourself?
  • What trait or habit would you like to practice and become better at?
  • What is most meaningful and important for you in the grand scheme of your life?
  • How do you want your relationships to improve, and feel like?

How are you preparing for the new year?

Here's to Hope, Special Moments, Kindness
&
Better Days To Come.
